Who are The Near Passerines?

Jojo ‘Jojo’ Johnjo - Legends are made, not born. Sure - Jojo plays the bass... mostly E and A strings, some D string, first few frets...open strings when possible. He can hit six (6!) of the more popular chords on the piano. On three occasions in 2022 he sort-of played a child’s glockenspiel, including once at a definitely-not-sold out Montessori pre-school picnic and bake sale. It remains shocking that even in today's charged political climate, these events are seldom mentioned. But most agree, the only thing that outshines Jojo's electric energy and mind-blowing vocals are his blazers.

Jennifer ‘Adam’ Grover - Wears all the hats (always metaphorically) as the designated Chief Yacht Rock Officer. Snapback, Strapback, Fitback. Every kind of hat is (metaphorically) represented because no one is better at the boogie up, boogie down and (on Irish holidays) shimmy up-then-down. Seriously, have you heard her on bass? Chef’s kiss. And her violin jams will crack open even the hardest of hearts to unimaginable jubilance. Thankfully, she is also a dependable source of Outlander lore and that, more than anything, holds the band together.

Brian ‘Brian’ Moses Keena - So called because he was found as a baby in a basket woven from the Boss’s broken guitar strings along the banks of Deal Lake near Asbury Park. Moses heroically took up the mantle of the Jazz Messenger after N. Diamond’s soon-to-be timely passing. Destined to share jazz tidbits, jazz love and jazz lingo weekly on his jazz-based jazz radio jazz show featuring (primarily) Jazz. Band-wise, he rocks, he rolls, he knows. Good Moses brings it 23/6, pausing briefly only once to readjust his pedals.

William ‘Cliff’ Wilson ‘Still Cliff’ Grover - This one is ready for more. Saw, Steel, Drums, Cymbals and 14 kinds of Saxophone, Cliff is here for you. Especially if you like Saxophone! Can he do it? The answer is yes. Will Will do? Will will. Just Will it! (I wish we’d say that more). Doesn’t play harmonica or banjo enough though, am I right? Quite literally, he is the world’s best Nickajack.

Kro ‘Clay’ Rosas Rose - One right note here, one dizzying note there. Thirty-six more now, each one tapping and perfect. Do it again. Now 2 seconds have passed and you’ve been key’d at by Kro (sweet like syrup). Imagine Ray Charles, Little Richard and Joan Jett adopted a baby and promptly left it with a music obsessed family on the frozen, wind-swept plains of Idaho’s Snake River valley to marinate in a stew of potatoes, guitars, marching bands and special spice to emerge 18 years later, fully formed and producing nifty ditty after nifty ditty, sprinkled in with awkward dancing.
